MATCH RECAP: Carrollwood Day defeats Berkeley Prep for 1st time in school history

LAKE MAGDALENE, Fla.- History was made tonight at Carrollwood Day School as they defeated Berkeley Prep in 4 sets (23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20). The win for Carrollwood Day was the first time they've beaten Berkeley Prep in school history (lost previous 3 matches)


Carrollwood Day started the match off on the right foot, beginning on a 3-1 run, on an ace by Carrollwood Day's Haley Brown. Both teams would continue to trade points in the opening set, as Carrollwood Day would go on a 6-4 run through the first 10 points of the match. Berkeley Prep's Ava Swain would give the Bucs a mini run, as they would tie it at 8-8. Carrollwood Day took a 17-16 lead, at the first timeout of the match that came following a Berkeley Prep service error. Carrollwood Day responded with 4 of the next 6 points & took a 21-18 lead late in the opening set. However, Berkeley Prep would end the opening set on a 7-0 run to take a 1-0 match lead at 25-23.


In the second set, Carrollwood Day responded quickly by starting the set, on a 4-0 run that featured a kill by Haley Brown & an ace by sophomore Jasmine Welton. Both teams traded points & Carrollwood would take a 7-3 lead. Berkeley Prep however would narrow the deficit a bit to make it a 9-7 Carrollwood lead. Carrollwood however would score 4 of the next 5 points to increase their lead to 13-8. Carrollwood Day cruised in the second set, 25-15.


In the third set, Carrollwood Day was in cruise control from the beginning, starting the set on a 8-3 run. Berkeley Prep's Camryn Carlo had a couple of early kills, that made it an 11-5 Carrollwood in the third set. Carrollwood Day went on a 9-5 run to take a 20-10 lead, late in the third set. Berkeley Prep tried to make things interesting with a mini run of their own to make it 22-14. Carrollwood Day held on to take a 2-1 match lead, winning the third set, 25-17.


In the fourth set, Carrollwood Day would start in a similar fashion to the third set, on a 8-2 run & also scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the set. Berkeley Prep would score 3 unanswered points to make it 10-6. Carrollwood Day would respond taking advantage of Berkeley's miscues & lead 15-10. The momentum shifted towards the Patriots all night long, as they would wind up taking the fourth set, 25-20 & the match 3-1.


Carrollwood Day head coach Spencer Hilland on the win: "It's an awesome feeling, these girls really wanted to win & beat Berkeley Prep" Berkeley Prep beat Carrollwood Day just a few days earlier at the Warrior Invitational. "The first set we should of won, but I think we let our nerves & jitters get to us", Hilland added.
