MATCH RECAP: Calvary Christian defeats Academy of the Holy Names in 3 sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-14)

CLEARWATER, Fla.- On Thursday night, it was a battle of two of the Tampa Bay area's top 10 premier volleyball programs. The fifth ranked Calvary Christian Warriors (3-0) defeated the eighth ranked Academy of the Holy Names Jaguars (3-2) in 3 sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-14) at Anderson Athletic Center.


Calvary Christian started off the match on a 4-1 run, where sophomore Kendall McCain & junior Sophie Mahaz provided kills for the Warriors. Both teams traded points for a bit, before a Cathryn Long kill that made it 7-3 Warriors moments later. Academy of the Holy Names would creep back into the match after a couple of unforced errors by Calvary, making it 11-9. Calvary Christian would take advantage of Holy Names' mistakes by going on a 6-1 run, to extend the lead to 17-10. Calvary Christian would hold onto & take the opening set by the score of 25-13.


The second set starting with a back & forth battle as Academy of the Holy Names started the set on a 3-1 run. However, Calvary would respond & quickly tie it at 5-5, following a few errors by the Jaguars. Both teams continued to trade points, as the set would tie once again at 10-10. Followed by a kill from Cathryn Long & a block by Jennafer Long, Calvary would take a 15-11 lead. As soon as Academy of the Holy Names would creep back into the match, Calvary Christian would go on a run, as their largest lead of the set was at 21-15. Calvary would not look back, as they took the second set, 25-19.


The third set started with a kill by Academy of the Holy Names' Camille McClendon. The host Warriors would respond following a few Holy Names' unforced errors, as they answered taking a 3-1 lead. Academy of the Holy Names would make a mini run to tie it 5-5. Calvary Christian would take a 8-7 lead, then Academy of the Holy Names would tie it once again at 10-10. The rest of the way was simply just all Calvary, as they would respond with a 9-1 run, with a couple kills & aces by freshman Lauren Cairo. Calvary never trailed in the third set, as they would go on to win the set, 25-14 & match 3-0.
