It was a two headed horse for the last couple of weeks for Clearwater Central Catholic (Fla.) standout defensive lineman Jerzhan Newton. Newton announced early Saturday morning that he is committing to the University of Maryland, over UCF on his Instagram page.
Newton, is listed as a 6'3, 255 pound defensive end & is ranked the 53rd best strong defensive end in the nation, according to 247Sports. Newton visited with Maryland back in June & was recruited hard by Maryland head coach Michael Locksley, along with defensive coach Delbert Cowsette.
Newton is the 16th Maryland commit from the class of 2020 & the 3rd to hail from the Sunshine State, as he joins McArthur linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II & Deerfield Beach wide receiver Deajaun McDougle.
Newton tells 247Sports, "When I went to Maryland, I really enjoyed the visit and Coach Locks. He's been recruiting me to join him, since he was at Alabama", Newton added. However, Newton is expected to make one final visit to Kansas State on October 18, ahead of their game vs TCU.
Maryland is now ranked 37th best in the nation for the 2020 recruiting class, with Newton's latest commitment.
