SEFFNER- After the previous 3 meetings between Plant & Armwood were decided by 7 points or fewer, tonight was a little of an exception. It all started on the 2nd play of the game, where Plant QB Tucker Gleason threw a short screen pass, that was resulted in a 22 yard scoop & score by Armwood senior Jalil Core.
On the following Plant series, it was a quick 3 & out, as Tucker Gleason continued to struggle for most of the night. Armwood's 1st drive of the night looked like the Hawks were in midseason form, as Armwood junior quarterback Cam'Ron Ransom scrambled & found a wide open Agiye Hall for a 78 yard touchdown pass & the Hawks took a 14-0 lead, just midway through the opening quarter. Armwood outgained Plant 91-8.
In the 2nd quarter, Armwood was not finished as Cam'Ron Ransom found the end zone, on a 5 yard keeper, that increased the Armwood lead to 21-0. The next Plant series was resulted in another punt. Following a drive that took just a little over a minute off the clock, sophomore running back James Smiley Jr. had a 38 yard run, that increased the Armwood lead to 28-0. Armwood was not done scoring touchdowns for the 1st half, as Ransom threw his 2nd touchdown pass of the half, a 29 yard strike to former Bloomingdale wide receiver Charles Montgomery. Armwood also added a field goal to end the half, which was a 32 yarder by Armwood senior kicker Jakobi Jackson, to go into the half with a commanding 38-0 lead.
Not much scoring in the 2nd half, as we had a running clock throughout. Plant added a 30 yard field goal by senior kicker Trevor Haire, who transferred from Steinbrenner in the offseason. Armwood went onto defeat their in-county rival, 38-3.
Plant (0-1). Will travel to Gaither next Friday night & take on the Gaither Cowboys (1-0), who were 29-14 winners over Jefferson (0-1) tonight.
Armwood (1-0). Will travel out-of-state to take on North Gwinnett (0-0) who will start their season tomorrow vs in-state powerhouse Colquitt County.
"We just had no answers tonight, Armwood outworked & outcoached us", Plant head football coach Robert Weiner said following the game."
Armwood coach Evan Davis on the Plant win, "It was a great win to start out the season, now we gotta take care of business, one game, one week at a time". Davis also added, that the trip to Georgia will be a "business trip".
