After suffering a season ending injury last season, former Tampa Bay Tech quarterback Michael Penix Jr. decided to redshirt. Penix appeared in 3 games for the Hoosiers last season, where he went 21/34, for 219 passing yards & had a touchdown pass. Penix also had 7 rushes, for 45 yards.
Penix, in his 2 seasons playing under head coach Jayson Roberts threw for 4,243 passing yards, had 61 touchdown passes & only threw 6 interceptions. Penix also had 65 carries, for 649 rushing yards & 16 touchdowns (24 games). In Penix's senior season, he was named the Hillsborough County player of the year, by the Tampa Bay Times. Penix was also the starting center fielder as a senior for the Tampa Bay Tech baseball team, where he hit .273 as a junior. Penix could also throw a 98 mile per hour fastball when he was in high school (no kidding).
Indiana head coach Tom Allen said, "he believes in Penix, and most of all he is healthy". Allen recruited Penix, as well as his high school teammate Jonathan King. Allen has recruited the Tampa Bay Area very well, as he is entering his 4th season as the head football coach at the University of Indiana.
